Everything’s changing – but what and when?

“What’s the new Government doing about employment law? When will we know all the details?”

The short answer is soon, but not yet.

We’ve had a few headlines and there are some pretty safe bets, such as extending the right to request flexible working from the first day in a new job and probably some sort of tightening up about zero-hour contracts (although we suspect they won’t be banned completely).

But for now, we all just have to wait for the full details.

In the meantime, the excellent employment lawyer Darren Newman’s blogs are very readable guides to what might happen, as well as how and when. Here’s one about tweaking the time periods to qualify for an unfair dismissal claim and how it could be done quickly (or not): https://rangeofreasonableresponses.com/2024/07/17/abolishing-the-qualifying-period-for-unfair-dismissal/.

Updates to follow soon.
